A Hap-tacular New Year's Eve or "Holy Crap! Kate blogged!"

Well, it's finally '09. Seems like a mere 365-make that 366 days this time around-since I was out celebrating the turn of the calendar and new leaves with several thousands of folks and the Flaming Lips. This year I decided to take it easy and wondered if ringing in the new year by myself would put me on the express route to Bluesville. It did not and brought a few things to my attention.

-Just because it's New Year's Eve, you don't have to drink. Yes folks, 'tis true. My bottle of rum sits unopened on my shelf. Quite honestly, I think if I had ventured a cocktail last night, I would have been out like a light and missed hanging out with my friends, Dana Carvey, George Carlin and Ricky Gervais. Lucky for me HBO had pity on me and scheduled some stand-up specials that I had yet to view. That Dana Carvey is one funny little man. His impressions are always dead on but his Dick Chaney had me in stitches. George Carlin...what can I say? He's always been a favorite of mine and I didn't know if I could make it through his special without tearing up a little bit. I grew up sneaking snippets of his album "Take Offs and Put Ons" and I'm pretty sure that had quite an impact on the formative years of my humour. May he rest in peace wherever he ended up.
Now Mr. Gervais, how do I love thee? Let me count the ways. If you do not know who he is, I highly recommend that you do some research. You can read all about him here and there's a funny bit about Humpty Dumpty here. Despite the fact that he is a slightly doughy fellow, eleven years my senior I still have a bit of a crush on him. It's all in the sense of humour. And he has pretty good teeth for a Brit. And I really like hearing him swear. In fact, I enjoy hearing anyone with a British accent swear. They're just so nonchalant about it. They throw around the F-bomb like it's nothing and "twat"...that may be my new favorite word. I used to rate it up there with the "C" word but I think it could go mainstream in my vocabulary. I may need to see if I can find one of those noise machines and fill it with the sounds of British men swearing. Of course, it would probably be cheaper to just watch "Snatch" before I drift off. They dropped the F-bomb 163 times in that movie. Yes, the Brits like their swear words-so do I!
-New Year's Eve is just another night if you're not doing anything special. Really, it is. I promise.
After spending three hours laughing my tail off, I decided to retire. It was 11.00pm. I watched a little more TV but was out by 11.30. Yes, you read that right, 11.30pm. I didn't even make it to midnight. I was, however, awoken at 12.15 by several text messages and calls wishing me a happy new year and all that stuff. I turned my phone on silent and went back to sleep until about 9 this morning. I awoke with a relatively positive outlook for the day (I would say the year, but it was only the 1st), so I figured that was half the battle. I have four days to get cleaned and organized and grocery shopped and budgeted and menu-ed for the year. Let's hear it for aspirations and resolutions. I'm off to start a load of laundry AND put it away and organize my craft room. Tomorrow? Who knows? One day at a time right?

Happy New Year and be nice to each other-or I'll have to get Surly with you
